How long do hearing aids last — and when to replace them?

A well-cared-for pair often serves four to six years. Heat, humidity, sweat, and ear wax are hard on microphones and receivers — which is why a drying kit and regular clinic checks matter more here than in a brochure from a cooler climate.

Lifespan is not a countdown clock. Some devices fail earlier because of moisture. Others are still working but no longer match a hearing loss that has changed, or they lack features (rechargeable batteries, better noise handling) that would make the user wear them more.

Repair first when the shell is sound, parts are available, and the audiogram has not shifted much. Replace when repairs are frequent, the manufacturer has ended support, or a trial of a newer pair clearly reduces listening effort.

Wipe them at night, store in a dry case, keep wax guards fresh, and never use surgical spirit on the microphones. Bring them in when sound seems ‘not like before’ instead of turning the volume up for months.
